Ran across this web site - got to love google. I used to spend many summers at Akeley (my parents owned a cabin on Williams Lake). Anyway - to the classes of '61, '62, & 63 (these are the people i knew best) -- hope you are all happy and life has treated you well. I was in Akeley about a year ago - have to say it hasn't changed that much (to me at least). Actually thought there were more people around back in the 60's. Best regards to all. flwallen@bemis.com

My dad, Clinton A. Lemke, graduated from AHS in 1949. I came up and saw him in Akeley when he and my mom, Betty, lived there for a short while in the early 80's. Nice quiet town. Both he and my mom have passed away now, my Dad only about 4 years ago in Jacksonville, Fl.

I have a question regarding the old Shorewood Resort. My son recently purchased property on the grounds of the resort. His property includes an old fish house which was part of the resort. My wife and I would love to find a picture of the original resort that we could frame and present as a gift. Does anyone know whether pictures of the resort still exist or if any of them can be copied or purchased? Thanks very much. Merlyn Solberg

Hi AKELEY, I have to write, I have not been on the site in ages and I was reading the post. Who is putting down the town? I missed alot it seems. Here is my two cents. I have a cabin in the area and I love the town. However, they could get more shops in. I know everytime I go into town there is lots of people walking a streets and looking a Paul. It would be nice if there was more little shop's. I do know in the winter it is tough to run a business. The town itself is nice, needs a little cleaning, but still a great town and nice people. I will be checking out CurtiSinn in August when I come up for the week. They need to reopen that hotel for vistors to stop and for my friends and family to have a place to stay close to the cabin. That was just a sugguestion. I love the town and the people. Keep up the good work and advertise more about the town to get people to come!!! Lv Ya, Michelle

I don’t believe there have been many unsuccessful grocery stores in Akeley. A small town business requires all the time it needs, good management, living within ones means, keeping your opinions about small town happenings and politics to yourself, never talk out of both sides of one’s mouth, never talk business or politics while in a public drinking establishment. One needs all of the sales possible in a small business in a small community. I have traded in these local stores for 63 years and have always felt something personal and good when I am able to support a local business. As I have watched these small businesses come and go, there were likeable doers who could change with the times and adapt to the changes and always practiced good business practices, and there were whiners who should look “deep within themselves” for the real problem as to why customers leave town when the same products are available locally. Or maybe the failure was because they just weren’t capable to begin with or did not understand small town business; it requires a lot of hard work and understanding and there surely are no magic riches. Good Luck! That's my 2 cents.

I have family living in Akeley, Twenty years ago I thought I would love to retire here. A lot has changed. I read Concerned Citizens comments, and the Web Masters. The citizen has a good point, I didn't think they were negative, just the truth. Akeley used to be a nice town, maybe too many people try to run the town now, or maybe it is just the wrong folks in charge, maybe not. I don't know. I just know I have no desire to come home. And I am sad.

To the Anonymous Concerned Citizen: It's always disheartening to read or hear negative things said about one's community, even if at times there may be a sliver of truth therein. Your comparision of Akeley's economy falls in that catagory. Certainly the region has seen better days, tourism has at times been better, family farms used to thrive, and if you really want to yearn toward better yesterdays take yourself back to the early 1900's, when Akeley was being considered for county seat designation with RRLCo's mill keeping employment solid. Times have changed, and it's easy to point out a negative, but it doesn't support the notion of a trend. Just in the past 6 years I have seen many improvements, with plans in place for more. I know many people in the area who do shop locally when they can, who are heavily involved in donating time, labor and efforts toward making this community as good as it can be, and while more are always welcome to join in, don't dismiss those who are contributing or recent efforts by promogating a myth that things are 'going downhill'. I bet when Akeley had all that you praised, it didn't have a website, did it? Or the ARCC, or Em's Cafe, or authentic Brick-Oven pizza from Headwaters Restaurant, or high-speed internet access, or a Movie Rental/ Arcade, or 3 ATM's, an auto-sales / repair and carwash.. Granted, it can get better faster but it isn't "going downhill".

  • After living here for around 40 years, now things sure have went down hill. We have had a lot of people move into the area and the business keeps going down. Who do we blame?? The business or the people?? Years ago we had four gas stations, a motel, hotel, two grocery stores, two used items stores, a hardware, a feed store, a blacksmith shop, school, two more churches, a clothing store, & three cafes that have all disappeared in 25 to 30 years. While talking to a business man in Park Rapids I found out that he didn't understand how the businesses in Akeley could stay open. He thought about 2/3 to 3/4 of the Akeley people shop in Park Rapids. I guess it is like this. Let's go to a ride to PR. Gas is still cheap, we'll eat out, get gas and groceries, and also get that bottle, "as we don't want people in Akeley to see us". Not good!! People move here as they like the area and want to be part of it. First thing is to join the church, as we all should believe, nothing wrong there. But there is where it stops. They do nothing for the community to grow and to help the businesses so they can prosper. It would help if they would eat, shop, get gas, and do their car repair here. I believe it would help the city and townships as they need more than our tax dollars. Start supporting the community. We have two businesses for sale now, but what is next??? We all might be driving to a neighboring town to shop or to get that bottle, even if gas reaches $3 a gal. A very concerned citizen.

I am a long time paper dealer who is phasing out...have a large amount of Paul Bunyan material...ads, articles, stories etc...from all eras and publications. They run two to four dollars and I always give a lot price. May I send a package on approval with no obligation to purchase? My customers return the unwanted items with a check and receive a new package each month. Send any details of your wants...anything else like lumbering etc...? As you may know, we have a huge statue of Paul here, in Bangor...Maine claims him also!! Please let me know even if you do not want to purchase ... Thank You, Sandra Baker Searsport, Maine
