My Grandfather, William Bates worked for a railroad in Akeley around 1903-04. I located an old railroad map that shows a railroad running NW from Akeley thru a town named Niawa then west almost to Lake Itasca. The Initials of the railroad on the map are R.R.L. CO. Does anyone there have any idea as to the name of this railroad? and/or any information about it or who I might contact to find out?

Hi, My mom grew up in Akeley (Audrey Vik) and she missed the Badora Birthday party. She wanted to go but couldn't make it, I was wondering if anyone recorded the program in anyway and if there was anyway I could buy a copy if they did. Thank you. Cindy Doherty

Great web site. I grew up in Akeley it's good to see whats been going on back home. I don't get back very often. But when I do I have a great time. I ride my bike on all the back roads, which most are paved now. And it brings back a lot of fun times I had back then which would be the 60's. My sisters Jodie Karl and Donna Stumbo still live there, matter of fact I just got done looking at Jodie's class reuion pictures, good job on the picture's. Even though I was'nt there, because of the web site I could see it was a big success and could be some what part of it. Akeleys a pretty cool little town, when ever I tell somebody where I grew up they tell me ya we've been through there thats a neat little town. Hope to get home a couple times this summer and maybe run into some of my old classmates. Butch

In the late 70's I regularly visited a campground between 11th Crow Wing and Bass Lake called Spring Bay Farm Campground. Is that area still in existence or are any of the former owners of that resort still in the area. Thanks for any help on this.

Hello, We are planning to be in Akeley this weekend and heard about a great eating place that was on TV - Jason Davis - On the Road Again - they featured a marinated roast which was out of this world. We would like to try it when we're in town. Waiting for reply - thanks!

I have been trying to do research on the historical as well as monetary value of a framed to hang on the wall version of 'Paul Bunyan's pictorial map of the United States,Depicting some of his deeds and exploits', by R.D. Handy, copyright 1935, R.D. Handy, and published by R.D. Handy. I love maps. That's why I have this one. It is SO controversially interesting and accurate - its perfect. But is it also a collectable? Is it something I should add to our insurance, or just enjoy? Thanks.

I am happy to see all these things on the website for Akeley. My historical connection to Akeley is my maternal Grandfather, Milner B. Wambolt. He was a blacksmith in Akeley for many years. Grandpa loved playing cards with Doc Melby, the dentist. My Grandfather owned property along the south shore of 11th lake but sold it sometime in the 1940's, I think. I was stationed at Duluth Air Base when I was in the Air Force and managed to get over to Akeley in wintertime, back in 1971. Somewhere I have a picture of myself standing on frozen 11th lake, right on the spot where we used to catch big bluegills. You can't tell much from that picture though. I would like to visit Akeley and camp down by the lake. I hope to be able to do this trip next summer, 2007. That will be 40 years since my brothers and I camped there in the summer of 1967. I realize its changed a whole lot since then! But in seeing this website and reading all these things it looks like folks around there know and love what they have and they seem to have become good stewards of it all. This is a good thing. Yes sir, I'd just like to camp at the lake and do some fishing. So, whether you're happy or sad, squabbling at town meetings, or living life to the fullest--thanks for keeping it all alive!

Does the Paul Bunyan Historical Society have any record of Paul Bunyan's ever having a grandson who came to live in the Chesapeake Bay area? I am reviewing the papers of a Chesapeake Bay area writer, Gilbert Byron (1903-1991) and have come across a poem (?) entitled "Paul's Grtandson" written between 1946 and 1950. I'm pretty sure it is an original work and have no idea what may have prompted the author to write it. The young boy's name is Noah, and he performs amazingly for such a young person. Any information or insight someone up your way could provide would be appreciated.

The Ice is great. All species are biting if you're in the know. Panfish are really going. The snomobile trails were good and now have 2" of fresh snow so these trails will be great this weekend also. Excellent cross country skiing on ski trails. The next couple weeks look great for our area.

Akeley, your little town is looking pretty nice. We will come back this summer and camp in your park.
