Akeley, MN Guest Book Results for 2010
12/29/10
I
believe it would be West Broadway
12/29/10
Your web site and the AAA book say that this statue is on Main
Street, but neither my GPS system, Google maps, nor Yahoo maps
shows any such-named street in Akeley. Is it really on
Broadway, as they tell me SR-34 is called as it passes through?
If not, can you tell me an street that intersects with Broadway
that is close by? Thank you

Interested in your city campground. Are the
sites close together (I prefer some privacy because I usually stay up late
and get up late; and is there any road noise? In other words, I guess I like
some isolation.
The campground sounds great.

Hello. I am interested in opening an animal boarding
facility. My specific interest is in the
Akeley Nevis area...If you click the link below, there is a
recent listing of 6 acres that just went
on the market. I have not yet been able to check it out
personally but will in the next day or so.
My idea is to open a pet boarding facility geared mainly at cats
and dogs but also
would include other pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks,
geese, chickens, potbellied
pigs, and such (although I think the biggest clientele will be
dogs and cats).
Who would I speak with to find out if this property-which is
zoned commercial-could be
an animal daycare/boarding facility?
From the photos and description the property appears to be
really high potential for such
a business. Very interested in speaking with someone as soon as
possible...
This facility would start of smaller but with the potential to
grow if the demand is there. It would
be a low cost premier facility.
Please contact me as soon as possible to let me know who I may
speak to about this endeavor?

What a great picture of the
week. It is a shame.

I am
trying to find out if Shingobee Resort on Howard
Lake is closed. We have vacationed there in the
past and have been unable to reach anyone at the
phone # that we have. If it is closed, is there
property for sale?

another eyesore for Akeley.

Is there a
motel in Akeley & what is their info
7/19/10

7/14/10
mays city
meeting minutes aint there
7/03/10
Could we
please get a bit posted that we'd like to save the
trestle west of Akeley. I believe the demolition is to
accommodate the snow groomer to go over the track. This
trestle has been here in Akeley since 1927. The people
of Akeley and surrounding communities need to save the
trestle. The DNR should keep the money in Wadena, where
its needed. The DNR should allow the trestle to stay, it
has worked for 83 years, it would be fine for a long
time yet.
Thank you

To the editor:
Alas. Here I stand alone, broken.
Once a majestic trestle, I carried log trains and
freight trains. Now my keepers say I can scarce support
ten, 150-pound people!
I have stood proudly for the better part of a century, a
sentinel to the western approaches to Akeley, I have
been the gateway from the Crow Wing Lake headwaters to
the lower 10 lakes and river, I am one of the last
vestiges of the lumber industry that made Akeley the
second largest city in Hubbard County.
I have graced the cover of phone books, been the
backdrop for innumerable graduation photos and
postcards. I have been the source of joy and adventure
with children climbing my girders, lying a few feet
above the river, spear in hand, in anticipation of the
annual sucker run. I have awed Heartland trail users
with the incomparable panoramic view of 11th Crow Wing
Lake from my deck.
I have served long and well and have done so without
complaint.
Now, the very agency entrusted with my care, has decided
my usefulness is in the past. They say that I can no
longer be repaired. The technology that built me nearly
a century ago, apparently lost to the ages. My 150,
1-1/2 foot diameter pilings, my 6” by 8” girders and 3”
by 10” cross supports deemed to weak to support a mere
1500 pounds.
How ludicrous! Some of the very contractors who are
bidding to tear me down have driven their vehicles
across me without fear, knowing full well I could still
support a caravan of vehicles!
I am wise enough to know that this is, in reality, about
the “motorhead” mentality that seems to have taken over
the DNR Trails and Waterways division for the last
decade.
I cannot currently accommodate their trail groomer, so
rather than repair and retrofit me, they have chosen to
tear me down and replace me with a 25’ lower concrete
structure.
“Akeley, where are you? Not a word has been uttered in
my defense. I have always been there for you. Don’t
abandon me in my greatest hour of need!”
The bids for my demolition and replacement have been
submitted.
Perhaps a groundswell of local support could convince
the DNR to rethink their options, use common sense, be
more cost effective and environmentally friendly and
repair me and allow me to serve as I have for the past
century.
Alas. Here I stand alone, broken.-Ernie Opheim, Akeley.

My granddaughter is working on
her "I Love Minnesota" Patch for Girl Scouts. We
were through your town this last week to take
pictures of Paul Bunyan. We did not know about the
mueseum. We also did not find any postcards,
patches, books, etc. Does the museum have these
items? I am very open to a return visit if these
items are available. We live in Grand Rapids, MN
55744. Is there a Girl Scout troop in your
town? Are they working on the patch too?? Looking
forward to hearing from you. Nancy Flora

Hi,
My name is
Tiana Daun, and I work for TPT’s Almanac. Every week we try to
have a Minnesota History question, and sometime this summer, I
would love to feature a question on Akeley’s Paul Bunyan statue.
I’d like to know, how tall is the statue, how much does it
weigh, when exactly was it built, or any other fun facts you fit
to see useful. If you could give me the answers to any (or all)
of the questions, that would be great!
Thank you!

I was
reading on-line of the Paul Bunyan days
committee is burnt out and I for one can
understands this. It does take a lot of time,
effort and energy to do this as well has yall's
jobs. I want to thank y'all for the great job
y'all have done and I do appreciate the job
y'all ladies have done, and I think the people
of Akeley should also. I know the
C@C committee can take
over and keep the festival going with out a
doubt, and the town of Akeley needs this to
happen, need to work together as one, not
against. The town of Akeley needs all the help
it can get to keep a float. Thanks Toney
