AKELEY CITY COUNCIL
WORK SESSION
FEBRUARY 7, 2008
7:00 PM CITY HALL
The Akeley City Council met in a work session Thursday, February 7,
2008 at 7:00 PM. Tom Moore called the meeting to order. Members
present were Tom Moore, Eric Sjolin, Brian Hitchcock, Frank Lamb and
Cliff Johnson. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the Council
and attending audience.
USDA is encouraging the City of Akeley to make water bond payments
by automatic withdrawal. Denise Rittgers suggested to the Council
that the City keep things as they are right now which is making
payments manually.
Nels Kramer and Mike Duclos were present to discuss development
ideas for the City of Akeley. Nels stated there is a county wide
program for different grants and rehabilitating houses. Some
discussion was held regarding the possibility of more camping for
RVs and ATVs near the Heartland Trail.
Steve Bolton, the City Attorney was present to discuss the health
insurance benefits of Police Chief Eric Klein’s family. He stated
the email Eric received and agreed to when he was hired which stated
the City would pay for 100% of his family’s health insurance, did
not state when it would expire so the City of Akeley would not be
bound by it. Steve also said if the other employees weren’t treated
the same or have the same benefits, there could be a problem with
discrimination. Brian Hitchcock asked about the motion he made at
the December meeting which stated that Eric’s family health
insurance would be cut $3,000.00 at a time for the next 3 years
until his benefits were in line with the other employees’ benefits.
Steve Bolton replied that he wouldn’t go into panic mode but the
situation should be handled as quickly and fairly as possible.
Several engineering groups have inquired about who the City of
Akeley plans to use with future projects including the Highway 34
project. Frank Thelin recommends using the engineering group the
City of Akeley has used in the past since they are familiar with the
town. Ulteig Engineering would like to meet with the Council to
discuss the City’s future projects. The Council will set up a
meeting in March to meet with Ulteig Engineering.
Eric Klein has contacted the two drivers involved with hitting the
light pole by T&M. The estimated cost to cap the pole if paid in
thirds by each of the two drivers and the City of Akeley would be
$300.00. There was some concern with how dark it may be there if
the light pole is capped.
Motion
by Tom Moore seconded by Brian Hitchcock and carried to adjourn.
