AKELEY CITY COUNCIL

WORK SESSION

JANUARY 5, 2009

7:00 PM CITY HALL

The Akeley City Council met in a work session Monday, January 5, 2009 at 7:00 PM. Mayor Scott Vettleson called the meeting to order.  Council members present were Scott Vettleson, Cliff Johnson, Eric Sjolin and Troy Hegg.  Brian Hitchcock was absent.  The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the Council and attending audience.

The Council reviewed Ordinance No. 101 “Fees and Charges for Various Services, Licenses and Permits for the City of Akeley, Minnesota”.  Each section of the ordinance was reviewed and fee schedules from other cities were provided for comparison of rates.  Suggestions for rate changes were made by council members and department heads as well as additional charges that were proposed to be made.

Denise Rittgers provided information to the Council which explained the total amount budgeted for city employee wages and salaries in 2009 and what the cost would be if a 2% and a 4% increase was given to them.  She explained that the original numbers that were given to the Council were from August before she had figured in her comp time and before the PERA rates and medical insurance rates had changed.  She also explained that when Melissa Niblick checks the lift stations that her wages should be paid from the water and sewer accounts and not from maintenance in the general account.

The topic of police reserves going door to door to remind citizens that dog licenses are required to be purchased was discussed.  Some council members stated that they didn’t think it was necessary and that residents may not feel comfortable having a police officer come to their door.  Eric Klein said it wasn’t meant to be intrusive and that they were only taking a census but said that he would not have the police reserves do it.

Motion by Cliff Johnson seconded by Troy Hegg and carried to adjourn at 8:45 PM
