About the VFW

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) arrived home wounded or sick and there was no medical care or veterans' pension and they were left to care for themselves.   In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations that became known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.   The movement gained momentum; by 1915, there were 5,000 members and by 1936, almost 200,000 members.

Today the VFW, with its Auxiliaries, includes 2.2 million members in approximately 8,100 Posts worldwide.  Annually, VFW members and its Auxiliaries contribute more than 13 million hours of volunteerism in the community.  Their mission:  to "honor the dead by helping the living" through veterans' services, community service, national security and a strong national defense.

About the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW

For as long as men have been going into battle, women have been nursing sick and wounded warriors back to health.   This was necessary because governments, until recently, did not provide adequate medical facilities for their servicemen.  Often times medical care was so bad that more men died of disease and food poisoning than of wounds.

The Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW was organized September 17, 1914.  Since then it has worked to ensure that America's veterans will not be forgotten and those who need assistance will get it.  Each year donations are made to help make life better for active duty military, reservists, veterans and their families, and America's communities.

In addition to supporting the VFW and its causes, the Ladies Auxiliary has developed a social conscience of its own.  With the paramount goal of helping families in distress, its members perform community service, fund cancer research, fight drug abuse, advocate for the rights of the elderly, support, the VFW National Home, and other causes.  Today there are nearly 600,000 members.

A warm invitation is extended to anyone who is eligible to become a member to join our local VFW Organization

Please keep all of our military in your prayers
